In honor of National Epilepsy Awareness Month, we are updating all of our loyal BHO customers on Colten Polyniak, the reason behind the origin of Bluegrass Hemp Oil and our renowned Genesis Blend. Not only are we proud to share with you a small glimpse on Colten’s progress, but we are also sharing his (and our) CBD journey in hopes that it may find other families who are struggling with similar experiences in their own home. Perhaps, just as our founders once were, you’re here looking for a better way of life for you or your family. Here, we hope to inspire another’s journey while also championing for the use of CBD for epilepsy.
Not only are there numerous potential benefits from a daily CBD routine for those diagnosed with epilepsy, but the same amount of possible benefits lay ahead for those who seek the full spectrum balance that our Genesis Blend Hemp Extract provides–whether you have a pre-existing condition, or you’re just looking to boost your immune system!
CBD For Epilepsy
The Polyniak’s aren’t the only ones to try their hand at experimenting with CBD to fix their son’s recurrent seizures. Several studies have proven the benefits of CBD for patients with epilepsy, and, with even more advanced research on the way, more and more doctors are suggesting it as an alternative supplement to combat frequent convulsions. In fact, many studies have demonstrated CBD’s neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, proving a direct correlation between CBD usage and anticonvulsant properties to minimize seizures.
It has been suggested that CBD’s anti seizure properties may come from the reduction of neuron excitability on two particular receptors. Within your body is a system of neurotransmitters and receptors more commonly known as your endocannabinoid system. Identified in the 1990s, this internal system helps to regulate bodily functions such as sleep, mood, pain, and immune system functionality. When ingesting CBD, this popular cannabinoid (scientifically known as cannabidiol) binds with receptors within your endocannabinoid system and, in turn, improves the functionality of your mood, appetite, and sleep patterns–over time, bettering a user’s quality of life.
Not only does CBD prove worthy of further examination for its supposed treatment for epilepsy, but also as a supplement for combating “other neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety, schizophrenia, addiction, and neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy” (Devinsky, et al, 2014).
Colten’s Story
As many of you know, Bluegrass Hemp Oil got its start when two parents refused to settle for anything less than the perfect solution to their child’s chronic seizures. In an attempt to find the best medicine for their son’s condition, Bill and Adriane Polyniak spent their days researching everything there was to know about epilepsy, leading to even more extensive research on CBD and it’s effects on users who suffer from frequent seizures. This is our CBD story for Bluegrass Hemp Oil and Colten’s cure begins.
While the fully-recounted tale can be found here, straight from the mouth of Adriane Polyniak herself, we will give you the run-down. In January of 2009, when Colten Polyniak was three years old, he fell down the steps of his childhood home and experienced his first tonic-clonic seizure. Unfortunately for him and his terrified parents, it would not be his last–not by a long shot.
After countless trial and error treatments in the form of hospital visits, blood tests, and varying medications, the Polyniak’s frantically searched for alternative methods of treatment, desperate to find a cure for their son’s epilepsy. Not only was their doctor’s blind experimentation with medications potentially harmful to their small child, but they noticed severe side effects in Colten from said prescriptions: he was experiencing extreme rage, weight gain, hair loss, drowsiness, and notable cognitive delay among a plethora of other aftereffects. Despite a lack of reassurance from their physician, this family persisted, open to trying anything new to keep their son happy and healthy.
It wasn’t until they found CBD that they finally felt hopeful for the quality of their child’s life. After years of hard work pushing against the unjust legislation surrounding the cannabis plant, the Polyniaks were finally able to produce and administer to their son a full spectrum, bloom-crafted, sativa-blend CBD extract that changed his life–and many other lives–for the better.
Still taking his twice daily serving of his Genesis Blend Hemp Extract, BHO is proud to report that Colten remains seizure-free (for 2800 days–and counting!) Now a Junior in high school, Colten is a well-rounded student, licensed driver, and enjoys daily activities such as hanging out with his friends, playing video games, hitting the gym, works and even working in the hemp fields to help harvest the plants used to make the CBD oil he still takes today!
Using CBD oil for epilepsy
Using CBD oil for epilepsy is an increasingly popular option for people looking to reduce the frequency and severity of their seizures. CBD oil is a natural, plant-based supplement that has been studied for its potential benefits in treating a variety of conditions, including epilepsy. CBD oil is thought to act on the brain’s endocannabinoid system, which is involved in regulating mood, sleep, and other neurological functions. When used in conjunction with traditional medications, CBD oil can potentially reduce the frequency and severity of seizures.
When using CBD oil for epilepsy, it is important to understand the right dosage and form of CBD to use. CBD oil is available in a variety of forms, including tinctures, capsules, creams, and edibles. Each form has a different absorption rate and may require a different dosage. Additionally, the dosage of CBD oil should be tailored to the individual, depending on the severity of their condition, their weight, and other factors. It is best to consult with a doctor before beginning a CBD oil regimen.
When taking CBD oil for epilepsy, it is important to be consistent. Taking the same amount of CBD oil on a regular basis is likely to provide the most effective results. Additionally, CBD oil should be taken in conjunction with other medications prescribed by a doctor, and any changes to the regimen should be discussed with the doctor. With the right dosage and regular use, CBD oil can potentially reduce seizures in people with epilepsy.
